Starting Our Mural!!

Now that students have decided on Under the Sea as the theme for their mural, they started to develop it.  Each student submitted pictures of underwater animals, plants, and habitats to add to our design.

Then I placed the images into an attractive composition.  I will outline their work and students will paint the mural.

Homework due Feb 20th / 21st

Students are to complete two of the three options in their sketchbook:

1. One value study of object of your choice, must show at least 5 distinct values and must have looked at objects while drawing.
2. A value study drawing of either eyes, nose, or mouth.  Try to look at yourself as much as possible for this, or use a friend if necessary.
3. One study (drawing) of a bug or plant, close up and in detail, like a leaf or a dead fly.

As always, effort is more important than drawing ability, PROGRESSION NOT PERFECTION.  :)

Also, students if you are newly rostered and do not have a sketchbook yet, please see the in class list of stores, or the list on the right hand side of this blog.

Sketchbook Homework due Jan 23rd and 24th

Students will complete a vocabulary sheet and the choice of three of the following five sketch options.  Drawings must be in a sketch book.
1. An aerial perspective in color utilizing the three techniques to show depth.
2. Three value studies of your hand in various positions.
3. One point perspective of either a hallway or street view, must have details and must have a vanishing point.
4. One sketch representing one of your social issues identified earlier.
5. Two sketches of objects from home, must look at objects, do not make these drawings up out of your head.

Students, credit will not be given if no effort is present, if your drawings are on lined paper, if your value studies are in pen, or if you try to do these during class time.  You've been warned.  :)

In Progress Aerial Perspectives

After brainstorming what makes certain objects look further away in nature, and gathering much of their own source imagery, students created aerial perspective landscapes in colored pencil. They were required to represent depth through reduced size and color saturation of objects, as well as the placement of those objects in relation to the horizon line. Students had the option to make these landscapes surreal, adding symbolic or conceptual imagery within their work.

Reviewing Value Studies Homework

Students will draw three objects, from observation, and fully develop their shading.  Values from highlights to shadows (the different shades of gray) should be present in each drawing.

Example of previously completed student work:

Due Jan 8th / 9th.

Understanding and Applying Aerial Perspective

Students identified key components of depth in natural settings and are creating their own landscape showing:
1. objects reducing in size as they recede
2. objects reducing in color saturation as they recede
3. objects moving towards the horizon line as they recede (up the page for land, down the page for sky)

Students can also add surrealist elements or symbolic elements to their landscape if they chose.

Here is a power point we discussed during the initial stages of this process...

Newly Enrolled Students...

Welcome!  We are so glad you're joining us!  In lieu of completing the Art research paper, due for your peers next week, you have two smaller assignments.

First you will need a sketchbook for this class, and second you must complete three value study (shaded) drawings of objects in it, of your choice.  Please be sure to look at actual objects or images, do not make these particular objects up out of your head.

Both the sketchbook and the drawings are due A day 10th, B day 11th.
