Art 2/3 Homework, Assigned March 10th, due March 14th

Students are to identify a quality photo of their choice to paint in an upcoming lesson.  Photos must be brought in by Monday March 24th.

Students are to complete five drawings in their sketchbook of objects from their home using blind contour technique.

  • A landscape in color showing depth using the aerial perspective techniques learned in class, must be on blank paper, in sketchbook.  

* Students' first benchmark will be given Wednesday, March 12th, review will take place Monday and Tuesday of that week.  

* Permission slips are available for trip to Academy of Natural Sciences March 28th and Philadelphia Museum of Art April 2nd.

  • One drawing of a room or hallway in your home, must accurately show two walls and either floor or ceiling.  Use one point perspective techniques learned in class.

Art 2/3 Homework, Assigned Feb 24th, due Feb 28th

Students will brainstorm and create a list of at least ten issues that exist in today's society.

Students will brainstorm what images could be associated with or reflect each issue.

Students will complete two drawings of their choice in their sketchbook.  Must use color.

  • A still life, assembled at home, at least three objects, drawn and shaded fully.  Objects should overlap slightly for good composition.

Art 2/3 Homework

Complete three drawings of your choice in your sketchbook.  Drawings should represent a thorough understanding of tonal variations and contrasting values represented in class.  Pencil, pen, and charcoal are all acceptable (charcoal must be sprayed before submission).  Students may use traditional shading, cross hatching, or stippling.

* For students to receive full credit, drawings must be completed in sketchbook. 
  • Perspective vocabulary sheet, under “pages” on blog.
  • Make a “perspective study”, examples below, must have at least five shapes.*  Teacher will demonstrate in class.

Art 2/3 Homework, assigned Feb 11th, due Feb 14th

Reflect on the works of Andres Serrano and Damien Hirst.  Write a one page summary of whether or not Art should push boundaries, and challenge issues like religion, cultural norms, or death.  How can this hurt society, or be detrimental?  What benefit may this serve?  How far is an artist allowed to push these boundaries?

At least 5 paragraphs, typed or hand written, must be legible.  Can be emailed to marajohnson@philasd.org by 2:30 pm Friday.

Welcome Spring Semester

Dear Students and Families,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to my Art class!

We have many projects lined up, and I hope you enjoy each one.  I will be going over my introduction sheet, course syllabus, and class procedures on the first day of school, but you can also find links to these under "pages", along the right hand side of this blog.

Homework Assigned Jan 21st, due Jan 24th

Students will complete three drawings in color of objects of their choice.  Colored pencils are preferable but markers, chalk pastels, or oil pastels are all acceptable.

Again, only unwrinkled, unlined paper will be graded.

Homework Assigned Jan 13th, due Jan 17th

Students will create 10 drawings:

  • two quality value studies of objects of their choice showing highlight, middle value, shadows, and cast shadows
  • three blind contour drawings of objects of their choice
  • five full figure gesture drawings of figure in various poses - try to not spend more than 30 seconds on each gesture drawing
Work MUST be without wrinkles rips or folds, and completed on blank paper to be accepted.

Homework Due Friday the 13th

Students will complete a series of 3 - 5 drawings of their choice - these can be studies, such as the value or line quality studies we have done in class, or anime, illustrations, or any other form of drawing that interests the student. Explore - you can draw whatever you want! Complete drawings on blank paper, in sketchbook. Due Friday Dec 13th.

Students learned to mix secondary and tertiary colors, tints, shades, and to reduce chroma by mixing complementary colors while developing a design of their own creation.

Homework for Next Four Weeks

Students rough draft artist research papers are due 12/6/2013, along with bibliography.  Rough draft must be at least two full pages in length, legibly written or typed.  Can be emailed to marajohnson@philasd.org by 3pm 12/6/2013.  Can be submitted early.

Topics covered must include:
* Artist's life
* At least 3 specific and important pieces the artist created:
   - Titles, dates, descriptions, images if possible, and where is that work now?
* Artist's importance in history or society
* How you feel about the artist's work
